From the southern shore around Moto-Hakone you look north-west across the water, and on clear days Mt Fuji rises behind the ridgeline about 30 km away. The best sightlines are near the Hakone Shrine torii gate, from the deck of the sightseeing cruise, and along the Moto-Hakone waterfront. Lake Ashi counts as a south-side viewpoint in our forecast: you stand south of the mountain even though you look north-west at it. The south side clouds up on its own schedule, so check the score below rather than assuming a clear Tokyo sky carries over the Hakone ridge. Where to see Mt Fuji at Lake Ashi --------------------------------- The mountain shows itself from the southern end of the lake. The Moto-Hakone waterfront and the area around the Hakone Shrine torii gate line up water, gate, and cone in one frame, and the sightseeing cruise between Moto-Hakone and Togendai puts you mid-lake with open sightlines for most of the crossing. From much of the northern shore the caldera ridge blocks the view, so do not judge the day from the wrong end of the lake. Above the lake, the Hakone Ropeway around Owakudani opens up a higher, wider angle on clear days. Best time of day and season in Hakone ------------------------------------- Mornings are the reliable window: clouds build around the peak as the day warms, and by early afternoon the mountain is often gone even in good weather. November through February brings the clearest air of the year, and November adds foliage around the shoreline. Summer is the hardest season, with haze hiding the mountain on days that otherwise look sunny. If Fuji is the main reason for your Hakone day, take the earliest Romancecar you can manage and do the lake first, saving museums and onsen for the afternoon. Getting there and the Hakone Freepass ------------------------------------- The Romancecar runs from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto in about 85 minutes, and the bus onward to Moto-Hakone takes about 30 minutes. The Hakone Freepass covers the round trip from Shinjuku plus unlimited buses, boats, the ropeway, and the cable car for 2 to 3 days, which suits the standard loop: bus to Moto-Hakone, cruise across the lake, ropeway over Owakudani, and the railway back down. When Fuji stays hidden ---------------------- Hakone is the easiest place in the region to absorb a cloudy day: Owakudani and its volcanic valley, the Open Air Museum, the shrine, and the onsen towns all work without the mountain. The caldera also makes its own weather, so the lake can sit under cloud while the summit is clear, and the reverse.
