From the observation deck beside the five-storied pagoda you look south-west across Fujiyoshida at the full cone, about 17 km from the summit. The pagoda is part of Arakura Sengen Shrine, and the deck sits 398 steps above the shrine entrance. Chureito is a north-side viewpoint, so mornings are usually your best window before clouds build around the peak as the day warms. The view from the deck ---------------------- The deck lines up three layers at once: the red pagoda in front, the rooftops of Fujiyoshida below, and Mt Fuji filling the sky behind. In mid-April cherry blossoms wrap the frame, in early November the maples turn, and in winter the snow-capped cone stands against the clearest air of the year. Summer is the weakest season, with haze and afternoon cloud hiding the mountain more often than not. The deck itself is small, so during blossom and foliage season expect a queue for the front rail by mid-morning. How many steps and how long --------------------------- The famous view sits 398 steps above the Arakura Sengen Shrine entrance, and the climb takes 15 to 20 minutes at a moderate pace, with a paved slope beside the stairs if you prefer a ramp. Entry is free and the park is open around the clock. From Shimoyoshida Station the walk to the deck, including the steps, takes about 25 minutes. Wear real shoes rather than sandals, and in winter watch for ice on the upper flights; the steps are outdoors the whole way. Best time of day to go ---------------------- Arrive early. Before 7 am you share the deck with a handful of people instead of a crowd, and the morning window is also when the mountain is most likely to be out, since clouds tend to build around the peak as the day warms. Late afternoon can work in winter when the air stays dry, but midday in any season combines the biggest crowds with the weakest visibility odds. When it is cloudy ----------------- Be honest with yourself before climbing: the pagoda without Fuji behind it is a pleasant shrine, not the famous view.
