 About this view
---------------

This camera streams from Lake Shoji, the smallest and least developed of the Fuji Five Lakes. Mt Fuji is about 17 km to the south-east. The distinctive composition here is the "Sub-Fuji" view: the forested foothills of Mt Omuro reach into the foreground, forming what looks like a smaller Fuji standing in front of the real one. The lake is about 0.5 km² and shoreline is mostly woodland, so the foreground stays free of vehicles and crowds.

Pre-sunrise through 8 a.m. is the unmatched window for the "Sub-Fuji" reflection at this vantage. The small surface area and forest shelter keep the water still longer here than on the larger lakes, making the reflection the most reliable in the Five Lakes group. Late autumn through early spring give the highest clear-sky probability. Mist forming on the lake surface at dawn in October and November sometimes produces frames of Fuji rising directly out of fog.

  Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

Is Mt Fuji usually visible from Lake Shoji? The clearest window is pre-sunrise through about 8 a.m., when the "Sub-Fuji" reflection is sharpest. Because this is the smallest, most sheltered of the Five Lakes, the water stays still longer than elsewhere, making it the most reliable reflection in the group. Late autumn through early spring give the highest clear-sky odds, and October and November dawns sometimes lift Fuji straight out of lake mist.

When is the best time to catch a clear view on the Lake Shoji cam? Early, from before sunrise to mid-morning, for both the clear summit and the mirror reflection. By later in the morning the breeze breaks the still water. Cold, dry mornings from late autumn through early spring are the strongest, so plan a dawn check rather than a midday one.

I am heading to Lake Shoji, can this cam tell me whether to go now? Yes. The feed shows the same Sub-Fuji composition you would see from the shore, so a clear summit and calm water mean the view is on right now. The lake is quiet and reached mainly by car along Route 139, so confirm conditions on the cam before the drive and cross-check today's forecast above.

Why is Lake Shoji called the "Sub-Fuji" lake? The wooded foothills of Mt Omuro appear directly in front of the larger Mt Fuji from this viewpoint, forming a smaller hill silhouette that looks like a miniature Fuji in the foreground. The composition is widely known in Japan as "Sub-Fuji" or "Ko-Fuji" (small Fuji).
