Mt Fuji is about 17 km to the south-east. The distinctive composition here is the "Sub-Fuji" view: the forested foothills of Mt Omuro reach into the foreground, forming what looks like a smaller Fuji standing in front of the real one. The lake is about 0.5 km² and shoreline is mostly woodland, so the foreground stays free of vehicles and crowds. Pre-sunrise through 8 a.m. is the unmatched window for the "Sub-Fuji" reflection at this vantage. The small surface area and forest shelter keep the water still longer here than on the larger lakes, making the reflection the most reliable in the Five Lakes group. Late autumn through early spring give the highest clear-sky probability. Mist forming on the lake surface at dawn in October and November sometimes produces frames of Fuji rising directly out of fog.
