 About this view
---------------

This camera streams from Mt Shichimen, a 1,989-meter sacred Nichiren Buddhist peak in Yamanashi prefecture, about 25 km due west of Mt Fuji. Because the camera sits at near-equal elevation to the upper slopes of Fuji, the framing is uniquely "peer-to-peer", Fuji appears at roughly the same level as the lens rather than rising above it. The view crosses the entire Fuji River valley, with the Akaishi Mountains visible to the south.

Pre-dawn and sunrise produce the strongest views: the east-facing camera catches Fuji backlit by the rising sun, with the silhouette glowing pink. Cold autumn and winter mornings (October through February) deliver the highest probability of "Unkai" sea-of-clouds inversions in the Fuji River valley below, which produce dramatic frames of Mt Fuji rising from low cloud while both peaks stand above. The west-side vantage means this camera's clearance pattern often differs from the north and south sides on the same day.

  Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

Is Mt Fuji usually visible from Mt Shichimen? This is the only west-side, east-facing cam, sitting at near-equal height to Fuji's upper slopes about 25 km away. Pre-dawn and sunrise are strongest, when the mountain is backlit and glowing pink. Cold autumn and winter mornings (October through February) most often bring "sea of clouds" inversions in the Fuji River valley below. Because of the unusual west-side angle, conditions here can differ from the north and south cams on the same day.

When is the best time to catch a clear view on the Mt Shichimen cam? Around sunrise, for the backlit silhouette and the best chance of a valley cloud inversion. October through February deliver the clearest, most dramatic mornings. This is a dawn-watcher's feed more than a midday one.

Should I check this cam to plan a west-side Fuji view? Yes, with the caveat that this is a remote sacred peak, not a quick stop: the standard route is a 4 to 6 hour climb, and many pilgrims stay overnight at the summit temple lodging. Treat the cam and today's forecast above as a way to read the regional pattern and pick a clear day in advance, rather than a same-hour go signal.

What is the religious significance of Mt Shichimen? In Nichiren Buddhism, Shichimen is regarded as the residence of the guardian deity Shichimen Daimyojin, a protector spirit associated with the Lotus Sutra. The temple Keishin-in at the summit has been continuously active since 1297 and remains a major pilgrimage destination.
