About this view --------------- This camera streams from Tenjoyama Park at 1,075 m elevation, the upper station of the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway (formerly known as the Mt Kachi Kachi Ropeway, after the local folk tale) above the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi. The elevated angle puts Lake Kawaguchi below in the foreground with Mt Fuji rising across the lake behind. This is the only elevated panorama in the live cam set and the most useful view for understanding the geography of the Fuji Five Lakes basin in one frame. From this height, low-lying fog and inversion layers over the lake become visible at sunrise as a sea of cloud below the camera. October through January give the highest probability of capturing this "Unkai" sea-of-clouds phenomenon. The elevated angle keeps Fuji clearly above the haze line that often obscures the mountain from lakeshore viewpoints, so on partly hazy days this camera shows a clean summit while the lake-level cams below show murk. This is the one elevated panorama in the set, at about 1,075 m, so it often shows a clean summit above the haze line when the lakeshore cams below are murky. On partly hazy days the ropeway feed can be your clearest read on whether Fuji is genuinely out. November through January gave the highest north-side morning clearance in our archive, 84 to 100% of mornings visible, while October 2025, the month usually recommended for this view, managed 32%. Pre-sunrise can reveal a "sea of clouds" sitting below the station with the mountain rising above. What is in the frame besides Mt Fuji? Lake Kawaguchi directly below the station and the Fuji Five Lakes basin opening out toward the mountain, which rises across the lake behind. It is the only elevated panorama in the set, so it is the one feed that shows the geography of the whole basin in a single frame. Before sunrise in late autumn the basin can fill with low cloud while the station and the summit stand clear above it. How is this different from the ropeway observation deck cam? Two cameras stream from the top of the same ropeway. This one is the Fujiyama NAVI feed from Tenjoyama Park at the upper station; the other is provided by UTY television from the observation deck. If one is offline or pointed into a passing cloud, the other usually settles whether the view from Mt Tenjo is open, so check both before deciding on the ride. What is the "sea of clouds" (Unkai)? Unkai is a layer of low cloud or fog that fills the lakeside basin while the upper slopes remain clear. From the ropeway station you watch this layer sitting below you with Fuji rising above.
