About this view --------------- This camera, run by Shizuoka broadcaster SBS, watches Mt Fuji from Gotemba, the highland city on the mountain's eastern base about 19 km from the summit. The Gotemba side shows a face of Fuji the lake cameras never see: from this angle the Hoei Crater, the great scar left by the mountain's last eruption in 1707, is prominently visible on the left flank of the cone rather than hidden around the side. Gotemba matters to visitors for more than the view. It is the gateway between Hakone and the Fuji area, home to Japan's largest outlet mall, which has Fuji views of its own, and the trailhead city for the Gotemba route up the mountain. Because the camera faces west, the cone is front-lit through the morning, which is also when visibility is most dependable. Winter is the standout season here: the city sits high, the air turns sharp, and the snow-covered eastern face can stay visible for whole days at a time.
