The southern face appears symmetrical with the Hoei Crater (formed by Fuji's most recent eruption in 1707) visible as a distinct notch about two-thirds of the way up the cone's right side. The south-facing slopes lose snow first in spring, so the snow-capped silhouette is reliably visible from December through April but increasingly bare from May onward. Summer afternoons frequently bring thunderstorms that build directly over the cone, so morning viewing is essential here. The Hoei Crater notch is most visible when the cone has a partial snow line, typically in late autumn and early spring when fresh snow on the upper cone makes the bare crater stand out.
