Train and bus seats open exactly one month before travel, not sooner. And whether you will actually see Mt. Fuji is unknowable until about [10 days out](https://isfujivisible.com/#visibility-forecast), so build one flexible morning into the plan instead of trying to book certainty. --- The Fuji booking paradox ------------------------ Everything around Mt. Fuji rewards a different booking date. Flights and lakeside hotels are cheapest and most available months ahead. Reserved train and bus seats cannot be bought more than a month ahead. And the only thing you really came for, a clear view of the mountain, only becomes forecastable about ten days out. Most planning stress comes from treating these as one decision. They are five separate ones: | What you're waiting on | When it opens or becomes knowable | |---|---| | Flights and hotels | Anytime; peak seasons sell out first | | Cherry blossom forecasts | First round mid-December to late January | | Autumn leaves forecasts | First round early September | | Reserved train and bus seats | Exactly 1 month before travel | | Fuji visibility | ~10 days out, sharpening as the date approaches | The rest of this guide works through that table top to bottom, which conveniently is also the order of your countdown. --- 6+ months out: book the frame, keep it refundable ------------------------------------------------- Pick your dates and book the expensive, slow-to-rebook pieces: flights and accommodation. In the peak windows (late March to mid-April for sakura, November for koyo, July and August for climbing), lakeside hotels with Fuji views are the first thing to disappear. Refundable matters more here than almost anywhere else in Japan, because you are booking months before anyone on earth knows what the season will do. You are not locking in a view. The Japan Weather Association's first round followed on January 29 ([tenki.jp](https://tenki.jp/forecaster/s_ono/2026/01/29/37612.html)). Rounds then update every week or two. The Fuji Five Lakes [bloom about a week later than Tokyo, peaking mid-April](/blog/mount-fuji-cherry-blossoms-2026); our [sakura forecast map](/sakura) tracks the area's spots through the season. - **Autumn leaves:** the first koyo forecasts land in early September. JMC released its first 2025 round on September 2 ([JMC press release, in Japanese](https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000010.000135496.html)). So if you booked a refundable early-April hotel back in autumn, this is when you check the forecast rounds and shift your stay a few days rather than cancel it. A week of flexibility absorbs almost any forecast revision. What it will not absorb is [tsuyu, the June to mid-July rainy season](/blog/japan-tsuyu-rainy-season-2026), so if your dates are still movable, move them around that. --- 1 month out: the only booking date that's exact ----------------------------------------------- Two things around Fuji open on a fixed clock: - **The Fuji Excursion limited express** (Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko without transfers) sells reserved seats "from 10:00 a.m. one month prior to the date of travel" ([Fujikyu Railway](https://e.fujikyu-railway.jp/fujikaiyuu/)). Weekend and peak-season departures go quickly, so set a reminder for that morning. The bus is cheaper than the train and drops you at the same station. [Book the Tokyo to Mt. Climbers have their own checklist for this window. The Yoshida Trail caps entries at 4,000 climbers per day with a 4,000 yen fee, and the gate is closed from 14:00 to 3:00 to anyone without a mountain hut reservation ([official Mt. Fuji climbing site](https://www.fujisan-climb.jp/en/info/28/)). If a summit sunrise is part of your trip, sort the hut and the entry slot as early as your date is fixed, not at the trailhead. These are model forecasts rather than observations (see our [methodology](https://isfujivisible.com/methodology)), and like any forecast they carry more weight as the date approaches. Still, this is the point where "will I see Fuji" stops being a hope and starts being a number. Use it to decide *which* of your days is Fuji day. Two rules do most of the work: 1. **Spend your best-scoring morning at the mountain.** Mornings beat afternoons in most seasons, decisively so from June to October. The exception is November to February on the north side, when afternoons are just as good; the data is in our [best time of day guide](/blog/best-time-of-day-to-see-mount-fuji). 2. **Keep the itinerary reversible.** If day 2 looks better than day 1, you want museums on day 1 and the lake on day 2, not fixed tickets fighting the weather.
