Two catches: you arrive at the lake mid-morning, after the clearest early hours, and leave as the afternoon cloud builds; and a forwarded suitcase cannot be in Kyoto the same night. If Fuji is the goal rather than a bonus, sleep one night at the lake and continue through Mishima the next morning. Either way, [book the Shinkansen leg](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1245035&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Ftransport%2F%3Ftarget_product_id%3D32) early on a fare you can still change, and make the call on the [visibility forecast](/#visibility-forecast) the night before. "Maybe an early day trip to see Mt Fuji, then back to Tokyo for the Shinkansen to Kyoto." The idea is sound, because Kawaguchiko sits roughly between the two cities. The execution is where it comes apart: an unprotected bus-to-train connection, a suitcase that has to be somewhere, and a mountain that clouds over on most afternoons. Whether a Fuji stop is worth it at all is covered in our [honest day trip guide](/blog/is-mount-fuji-day-trip-worth-it); this post assumes you want to try and gives you the operator numbers. --- Kawaguchiko to Kyoto in one day: two timelines ---------------------------------------------- Every departure below comes from the operator timetables current in September 2026, and Japanese operators reshuffle them each season. Use them to judge whether the day fits at all, then confirm your own trains and buses on the operator pages before you book. Both routes start with the 7:30 Fuji Excursion limited express from Shinjuku, which reaches Kawaguchiko about two hours later, weekdays and weekends alike (Fujikyu Railway timetable from March 14, 2026; ¥4,200 one way). The [Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko highway bus](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1193113&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Factivity%2F159339-tokyo-mtfuji-highway-bus%2F%3Fspm%3DSearchResult.SearchResult_LIST%26clickId%3D96cc8e0b2d) takes about 1 hour 45 minutes for ¥2,200 and sells any remaining seats on the day, but its operator warns that this line often sells out, so book it ahead too. **Route A, continue west via Mishima.** Take the 13:20 Mishima Kawaguchiko Liner, the Fujikyu highway bus that reaches Mishima Station's south exit at 15:00 (¥2,500 online, ¥2,700 at the counter). The 15:46 Hikari reaches Kyoto at 17:43 (JR Central basic timetable). In-vehicle time from Shinjuku adds up to about 5 hours 35 minutes. The 46 minutes at Mishima is your connection buffer, and you need it: Fujikyu states that arrival times slip with traffic and that a late arrival earns no refund. Lake time: about 3 hours 50 minutes. **Route B, back through Tokyo.** Ride the early-afternoon Fuji Excursion back to Shinjuku, in just after 16:00 (Fujikyu Railway), cross to Tokyo Station on JR, and board the 17:00 Nozomi, into Kyoto at 19:16 (JR Central). Lake time grows to 4 hours 40 minutes and the connection is forgiving, since Nozomi trains leave Tokyo several times an hour into the late evening. JR Pass holders take a Hikari instead or pay the Nozomi supplement. The cost is about 90 more minutes on the clock. Either way you are at the lake from about 9:30 until early afternoon. In our forecast data, north-side mornings scored visible (8 or higher) on 63% of days from August 2025 to July 2026, but only 41% from June to October, and afternoons run lower still ([how we score](/methodology)). Take Route B on weekends and holidays, when the expressway backs up. Fujikyu does not compensate you for a connection lost to traffic, and the next Hikari out of Mishima is two hours behind the one you missed. --- When an overnight makes more sense ---------------------------------- One night at the lake buys a sunset attempt and, more importantly, the next morning, the strongest window of the day in every warm month. Day 2: sunrise at the lakeshore, breakfast, the 9:20 Mishima liner (in at 11:00), then the 11:46 Hikari, into Kyoto just before 14:00. Same 46-minute buffer, and an arrival that fits a normal afternoon check-in. If the morning is clear and you want to linger, the next Hikari from Mishima is two hours later, so plan around the xx:46 rhythm, not the bus alone. Book the lake hotel months ahead on a free-cancellation rate, so you can drop it if the forecast turns. Hotel-to-hotel sending works only where both front desks handle Yamato parcels, and Yamato asks you to time the parcel to arrive a day before your stay. So a suitcase handed in at your Tokyo hotel this morning is not in Kyoto tonight: pack one night's essentials in your daypack or accept a night without the big bag. On the overnight plan the timing works naturally. Yamato's own price example is ¥3,160 for a 160 size bag between Kyoto and Tokyo, and its Kyoto Station counter stores bags at ¥1,000 per day if you arrive before your room is ready. **Carrying everything.** The Mishima liner takes one piece per person in the underfloor trunk, loaded and unloaded by you (Fujikyu Bus). On the Shinkansen, a bag measuring 160 to 250 cm in total (length plus width plus height) needs a seat with an oversized baggage area, reserved at no extra cost. Board without one and JR charges ¥1,000. Anything over 250 cm cannot board at all. **Storing at Kawaguchiko.** Fujikanko Kaihatsu, which runs the building in front of the station, lists eight small and medium lockers inside (¥500 and ¥600) and 18 large-suitcase lockers behind it (¥800). Its travel desk two minutes away also stores bags at ¥500 (under 60 cm) or ¥800 (60 cm and over) from 9:00 to 17:30, pickup by 18:00, no reservation. That is a small pool on a busy morning, so treat the staffed counter as the fallback, not the lockers alone. --- Reservations and connections: what limits your weather flexibility ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lock the flexible bookings early and the rigid ones late. - **Shinkansen: book early, change late.** Our booking partner is an official Japan Railway partner and sells reserved Shinkansen seats to a QR code, so there is no ticket machine queue at Mishima or Tokyo. It states that a confirmed booking can be changed or refunded in its app until one hour before departure, and that changes stop once you scan the QR code or collect a paper ticket. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, then slide it on the day. - **Fuji Excursion: the rigid one.** All seats reserved, on sale at 10:00 one month ahead, four round trips a day plus a seasonal extra (Fujikyu Railway). Clear days sell first; the Shinjuku highway bus is the fallback. - **Mishima liner: buy the night before.** All seats reserved, online booking open until ten minutes before departure, and the Kawaguchiko window sells tickets from 6:30 to 19:00 (Fujikyu Bus). - **Nobody protects the connection.** No operator holds the Hikari for a late bus. Keep 45 minutes in hand; a miss means a slower Kodama or a two-hour wait. Because the Shinkansen is booked and movable, a red forecast costs nothing: ride Nozomi straight through and save the lake for another trip. Booking timelines for everything else are in our [when to book guide](/blog/when-to-book-mount-fuji-trip). --- When to skip the detour and settle for the Shinkansen view ---------------------------------------------------------- Skip Kawaguchiko when the night-before north score is 5 or lower, when it is a weekend or holiday and your bags cannot be forwarded, or when Kyoto holds a fixed evening commitment. Take a morning Nozomi instead and reserve window seat E, the right side heading west; the mountain appears around Shin-Fuji Station. One caveat the seat guide cannot fix: the train shows the south face, which scored visible less often than the north in our forecast data (the south score is anchored on Lake Ashi, a stand-in for the corridor). From August 2025 to July 2026 the south side cleared on 48% of mornings and 29% of afternoons, and on just 5% of afternoons from June to October.
