Tokyo to Kawaguchiko: Bus, Fuji Excursion, or Tour for a Fuji Morning?
======================================================================

 October 18, 2026

 *Updated October 18, 2026*

> **TL;DR:** For a Fuji morning at Lake Kawaguchi, take the first highway bus: 6:05 from Shibuya Mark City (at Kawaguchiko Station by 8:05) or 6:45 or 6:55 from Busta Shinjuku (8:30). The 7:30 Fuji Excursion train arrives at 9:28 but cannot get stuck in traffic, which makes it the safer pick on busy November weekends. Hato Bus's English-guided tour leaves Tokyo Station at 8:00 and Shinjuku at 8:30, about two hours after the first buses. Check the north-side [forecast](/#visibility-forecast) the night before: when only the morning scores well, only the early options are worth it.

Every way from Tokyo to Lake Kawaguchi takes about two hours. What separates them is when you arrive, and whether a jam on the Chuo Expressway can eat your morning. Still deciding whether to go for the day at all? Start with our [honest day trip guide](/blog/is-mount-fuji-day-trip-worth-it), and plan the day itself with the [one-day itinerary](/blog/tokyo-fuji-daytrip-speedrun).

The earliest arrivals at Kawaguchiko Station
--------------------------------------------

| Option | Leaves Tokyo | Arrives at Kawaguchiko Station | Adult one way |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highway bus from Shibuya Mark City | 6:05 | 8:05 | 2,300 yen (2,100 online) |
| Highway bus from Tokyo Station, Yaesu South Exit | 6:20 | 8:27 | 2,300 yen |
| Highway bus from Busta Shinjuku | 6:45 and 6:55 | 8:30 | 2,200 yen (2,000 online) |
| Limited express Azusa 1 from Shinjuku, change at Otsuki | 7:00 | 9:15 | JR ticket to Otsuki, plus 1,170 yen on Fujikyu |
| Fuji Excursion limited express from Shinjuku | 7:30 | 9:28 | 4,200 yen, all seats reserved |
| Hato Bus English-guided tour | 8:00 Tokyo Station, 8:30 Shinjuku | No station stop; the first stop is the 5th Station or Oshino Hakkai | 15,000 yen with lunch |

Times come from the operators' timetables. The early Shinjuku buses keep the same times on the October and the November to December 2026 timetables, and the Fujikyu Railway trains run to times valid from March 14, 2026. The Shibuya times are as of July 1, 2026, and the Tokyo Station times date from a December 2025 revision, so check those two when you book.

An 8:05 or 8:30 arrival even beats the first Red Line sightseeing bus to the north shore, which leaves the station at 9:00 ([Fujikyu Bus](https://www.fujikyubus.co.jp/shuyu)). Our [getting around guide](/blog/getting-around-fuji-five-lakes) covers the loop buses and when a taxi makes sense.

How much the arrival time matters depends on the month
------------------------------------------------------

Arriving at 8:30 instead of 9:28 sounds trivial, and in some months it is. It depends on how much worse the afternoon is.

We score the north side of the mountain, anchored on Lake Kawaguchi, every morning and afternoon. The figures below are archived forecast scores we have kept since July 2025, not observations, pooled from August 2025 to July 2026. A period counts as visible at a [score of 8 or more out of 10](/methodology).

| North side, Lake Kawaguchi | Mornings scored visible | Afternoons scored visible | Visible mornings that stayed visible in the afternoon |
|---|---|---|---|
| November to February | 89% | 90% | 98% |
| March to May | 66% | 57% | 75% |
| June to October | 41% | 20% | 40% |

From November to February, the arrival time barely matters: a morning scored visible was followed by a visible afternoon score 98% of the time. From June to October, afternoons scored visible half as often as mornings, and a visible morning held through the afternoon only 40% of the time. Those are the months when the 6:05 or 6:45 bus earns the early alarm. A cloudy morning rarely turns around, either: across the year, a north-side morning below 8 was followed by a visible afternoon 10% of the time.

Earlier is better even before noon. Fuji City, which has checked the mountain three times a day from the south side since 1990, recorded the whole mountain visible at 37.3% of its 8:00 checks in 2025, against 26.3% at noon. Our [time of day guide](/blog/best-time-of-day-to-see-mount-fuji) explains why clouds build as the day warms.

Let the forecast pick the departure
-----------------------------------

Our [visibility forecast](/#visibility-forecast) publishes a fresh set of scores around 4:00 PM Japan time. The evening before, read the north-side morning and afternoon scores, then book to match.

| North-side forecast | What to book |
|---|---|
| Morning and afternoon both 8 or higher | Anything. The 7:30 train, a mid-morning bus or a tour all arrive in time. |
| Morning 8 or higher, afternoon below 8 | The first bus from Shibuya, Tokyo Station or Busta Shinjuku. Skip the tours. |
| Morning below 8, afternoon 8 or higher | A late-morning bus or train that arrives around lunch. Expect this one rarely. |
| Both below 8 | Not a Fuji day. Swap in your [backup plan](/blog/mount-fuji-backup-plan). |

On the morning itself, open the [Kawaguchiko live cam](/kawaguchiko-live-cam) before you leave for the terminal. If the forecast says morning only and even a 6:05 bus feels too late, the fix is a night by the lake. Our [guide to how many nights to stay](/blog/how-many-nights-in-kawaguchiko) runs the numbers, and Klook lists [hotels around the Fuji Five Lakes](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1264180&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Fdestination%2Fp50001218-fuji-mountain%2F3-hotel%2F).

The highway bus: earliest and cheapest, but on the road
-------------------------------------------------------

Busta Shinjuku's buses leave from its 4th-floor terminal, directly connected to the station's south exit, roughly every 10 minutes through the morning. Fujikyu puts the ride at about 1 hour 45 minutes. The 6:55 runs non-stop in a timetabled 1 hour 35 minutes, while the 6:45 also stops at Mitaka, Fuchu, Hachioji and towns farther west and still arrives at 8:30.

Every seat is reserved. Bookings open on the same date one month ahead and close 10 minutes before departure, and paying online cuts the Shinjuku fare to 2,000 yen ([Fujikyu Bus](https://bus.fujikyu.co.jp/en/highway/fujisan/shinjuku-kawaguchiko/)). For rides from October 1, 2026, Fujikyu's buses sell online through its Fujiyama Connect site, while Keio's stay on highwaybus.com. Both sites list every departure, but switching between a Keio and a Fujikyu bus counts as a cancellation, with a fee. Book the evening the forecast turns green, on either site or through [Klook's Tokyo to Mt. Fuji highway bus](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1193113&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Factivity%2F159339-tokyo-mtfuji-highway-bus%2F%3Fspm%3DSearchResult.SearchResult_LIST%26clickId%3D96cc8e0b2d).

Traffic on the Chuo Expressway
------------------------------

The catch with the bus is the road. Fujikyu warns that accidents, congestion and bad weather can delay arrival, and that a late bus earns no refund. The Kanto Regional Development Bureau calls this stretch of the Chuo Expressway one of the most congested in Japan, with severe jams near the Kobotoke Tunnel and Sagamiko on tourist-season holidays. For the September 2026 holiday weekend, NEXCO Central forecast an outbound queue of up to 45 km toward Sagamiko. It said drivers who passed Takaido outside 9:00 to 14:00 would save about two hours.

The first buses run well ahead of that window: the 6:45 is timetabled through Sagamiko at 7:38. November's autumn leaves weekends are exactly the kind of tourist-season holiday the bureau describes. The Fujikawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival runs from November 7 to 29, 2026 (see our [autumn leaves guide](/blog/mount-fuji-autumn-leaves-2026)), and Labor Thanksgiving Day makes November 21 to 23 a three-day weekend. On those weekends, take one of the first buses for the widest margin, or take the train.

---

The Fuji Excursion: later, but no traffic
-----------------------------------------

The Fuji Excursion runs direct from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko, with no unreserved seats, on four round trips a day. The first train leaves Shinjuku at 7:30 and arrives at 9:28 on weekdays and weekends alike, followed by the 8:30 (10:26), 9:30 (11:28) and 10:30 (12:24). The fare is 4,200 yen, and tickets go on sale at 10:00 one month before travel ([Fujikyu Railway](https://www.fujikyu-railway.jp/en/fujikaiyuu/)). Fujikyu describes the train as free from traffic jams, and on a holiday weekend that matters more than the hour it gives up to the first bus. It also stops at Shimoyoshida, the station for Arakurayama Sengen Park and its Chureito Pagoda.

A Japan Rail Pass covers the train only as far as Otsuki. For the Fujikyu section to Kawaguchiko you pay the 1,170 yen fare plus a 600 yen limited express charge, according to Fujikyu Railway. [Fuji Excursion seats are also sold on Klook](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1195318&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Fjapan-rail%2Fshinjuku-station%2Fkawaguchiko-station%2F%3Fspm%3DHome.SearchSuggest_LIST%26clickId%3D8a5c983d9e).

### If the 7:30 is sold out

Change at Otsuki instead. The limited express Azusa 1 leaves Shinjuku at 7:00 and reaches Otsuki at 7:56, according to JR East. The 8:19 local from Otsuki arrives at Kawaguchiko at 9:15, according to Fujikyu Railway. That is 13 minutes ahead of the Fuji Excursion, at the cost of one change of train. The JR Pass covers JR limited expresses like the Azusa, so pass holders pay only the 1,170 yen Fujikyu fare.

Tours: no transfers, but no early start
---------------------------------------

Hato Bus runs an English-guided Fuji day tour from Tokyo Station's Marunouchi South Exit at 8:00 and Shinjuku Station's East Exit at 8:30 ([Hato Bus](https://www.hatobus.com/v01/en/course/2026/all-year/RE789)). The first stop is the Mt. Fuji 5th Station, or Oshino Hakkai when the Subaru Line is closed. Lunch follows at a Lake Kawaguchi hotel, then Oishi Park and the Arakurayama Sengen Shrine. It costs 15,000 yen with lunch, runs on weekdays through November 30, and ends at Shinjuku around 17:30. Hato Bus takes bookings up to one hour before departure, so even a tour can wait for the forecast.

That 8:30 Shinjuku start is almost two hours after the first bus. A tour therefore fits the days when the afternoon scores as well as the morning, which in our archive means most winter days. In return it removes the terminals, transfers and loop-bus timetables, which suits travelers with older parents or [small children](/blog/mount-fuji-with-kids). This course's 2026 schedule ends on November 30, so check Hato Bus for winter dates.

If you want a guide and the early hours too, a [private tour](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1247027&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Factivity%2F85926-private-one-day-tour-mtfuji-lake-kawaguchiko%2F) is the version to look at. Check the earliest pickup the listing allows and its cancellation terms before you book.

Quick FAQ
---------

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| *What is the fastest way from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko?* | The 6:55 non-stop highway bus from Busta Shinjuku, timetabled at 1 hour 35 minutes. Most buses take about 1 hour 45 minutes, and the 7:30 Fuji Excursion just under 2 hours. The earliest arrival we found is 8:05, on the 6:05 bus from Shibuya Mark City. |
| *Bus or train on a November weekend?* | The train, or one of the first buses of the day. Holiday jams on the Chuo Expressway can add hours to the trip, and the train avoids the road entirely. |
| *Does the Japan Rail Pass cover the Fuji Excursion?* | Only as far as Otsuki. The Fujikyu section to Kawaguchiko costs 1,170 yen plus a 600 yen limited express charge. |
| *Can I book the night before?* | Yes. Highway bus seats sell until 10 minutes before departure, and Hato Bus takes bookings up to an hour ahead. The Fuji Excursion can sell out on clear weekends, and the 7:00 Azusa via Otsuki is the fallback. |
| *Is the first bus worth the early alarm?* | From June to October, yes: in our forecast archive, north-side afternoons scored visible half as often as mornings (20% vs 41%). From November to February, mornings and afternoons scored about the same (89% vs 90%). |
