Step-by-step timeline and decision points
1. Tokyo to Kawaguchiko before sunrise
- Why early: roads and tracks are quiet and the first light paints the lake pink.
- How: Limited Express Fuji Excursion 1 (Shinjuku 05:30 → Kawaguchiko 07:23). Reserve the night before at any JR machine.
- Backup: Keio Highway Bus 05:15 (¥2 250) if the train sells out.
2. Lake Kawaguchiko North Shore
Mirror-calm reflections. Stand near the wooden dock by the Lawson store for a strong leading line. If wind ripples the water, move left toward the reeds for a natural frame.
3. Live-cam branch logic
Check our live-cam grid while you travel.
If the summit is | Go to | Travel | Why |
---|---|---|---|
Crystal clear | Chureito Pagoda | Kawaguchiko to Shimoyoshida on Fujikyuko line, 17 m, plus 15 m stair climb | Iconic pagoda-plus-Fuji combo |
Hazy or hidden | Shiraito Falls | Retro bus to Fujinomiya then local bus, about 60 m | Waterfall still looks great when Fuji is shy |

4. Lunch fuel in Kawaguchiko
Two reliable picks:
- Hotori Cafe – lakeside curry plate, roughly ¥1 300.
- Hōtō Fudō – Yamanashi noodle stew, roughly ¥1 200.
5. Afternoon elevation at Tenjōyama Park
A three-minute gondola gains 400 m. Use a 16 mm lens for sweeping lake-and-cone panoramas. Rising pressure on our forecast panel hints at a clear sunset.
6. Sunset finale at Lake Shoji
Smallest of the Fuji Five Lakes, Shoji gives a tight frame. From late August to October the sun sets right behind the summit. Tripod spots fill fast so arrive by 16:30.
7. Return to Tokyo
Catch the 19:05 highway bus from Shojiko Entrance. It stops at Kawaguchiko then runs nonstop to Shinjuku. Last fallback is Fuji Excursion 50 leaving Kawaguchiko at 21:14.
Budget vs comfort quick-look

Contingency playbook
- Check our forecast and live cams frequently.
- If clouds roll in, pivot to indoor spots like Fuji Panorama-Kan or Oshino Hakkai.
- Missed the last bus? Use the JapanTaxi app or share a cab to Gotemba, then hop a train back to Tokyo.
Minimal gear checklist
- 16-70 mm zoom or 24 mm prime
- Circular polarizer to cut haze
- ND64 filter for lake long exposures
- Lightweight carbon tripod
- IC card (Suica or PASMO) with at least ¥5 000
- Cash for rural buses and lockers
- Power bank and USB-C cable
- Down jacket from October to April
FAQ
Can I squeeze Gotemba Premium Outlets into this day?
Yes, but you will miss sunset. Swap Lake Shoji for a two-hour outlet sprint via Gotemba Station.
Do I need a JR Pass?
Helpful but not essential. Out-of-pocket transport on this route is under ¥9 000. Fuji Excursion and the Fujikyuko local trains are covered if you already hold a pass.
Is a day climb possible?
Fit hikers can summit and descend in about ten hours, but transport windows make it risky. We recommend staying in an overnight mountain hut.
