The last summer bus back leaves Kawaguchiko at 20:15. Only commit the night before, once the [visibility forecast](/#visibility-forecast) is green. A JR Pass covers only the JR section as far as Otsuki; the Fujikyu section and its express fee are extra. Because the train is all reserved and clear days sell out first, it suits people who can commit a day or two ahead; night-before deciders should default to the bus, which runs all day and needs no seat lottery. Coming home: on summer 2026 timetables the last bus leaves Kawaguchiko at 20:15 and reaches Shinjuku at 22:00. The train's four daily round trips end in the early evening, so a sunset finish rides the bus either way. --- The itinerary ------------- ### 07:30, Shinjuku: go Board with breakfast in hand. Check the [live cams](/mt-fuji-live-cams) once en route: if the summit is already out, you will want the lakeshore first. ### 09:30, Kawaguchiko north shore Drop any luggage in the station coin lockers and head straight for the north shore. Mornings beat afternoons for visibility in every warm month of [our data](/blog/best-time-to-see-mount-fuji) (forecast-derived scores at the 8+ threshold, [methodology](/methodology)), so front-load the open views. The Red Line sightseeing bus runs every 15 minutes from 9:00 to 17:45 and takes about 27 minutes to the north-shore stops (1-day loop-bus coupon ¥1,500, [Fujikyu Bus](https://www.fujikyubus.co.jp/shuyu)). Pick one anchor: the lakeshore promenade nearer the station keeps the schedule loose, while riding out to Oishi Park when the flowers are on means leaving the park again by about 10:30 to hold the timeline. ### 11:30, head for Chureito (on the deck by about 12:15) Take the Fujikyuko line to Shimoyoshida (¥310, [operator fares](https://www.fujikyu-railway.jp/fare/)); check the departure board over lunch plans, since the locals are not frequent. Walk about 25 minutes to Arakurayama Sengen Park and climb the 398 steps to the pagoda deck ([Fujiyoshida City](https://fujiyoshida.net/spot/12)). Free, open around the clock, and far calmer than at midday peak. ### 13:15, lunch back in Kawaguchiko Hoto noodle shops cluster near the station and the lakeshore. This is also your decision point: check the cams again. ### 14:00, the flexible block - **Summit still out?** Ride the [Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway](https://www.mtfujiropeway.jp/en/guide/index.html): ¥1,000 round trip, three minutes up to a deck at 1,075 m over the lake. - **Clouds building?** Go where the mountain is optional: the [Green Line bus](https://www.fujikyubus.co.jp/shuyu) (9:10 to 16:40, roughly every 30 minutes) reaches the thatched-roof village of [Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba](https://saikoiyashinosatonenba.jp/en/price/) (¥500 entry, [about 40 minutes by bus](https://fujisan.ne.jp/pages/364/)). Watch the clock out there: with the line ending at 16:40, plan to start back from Saiko by mid-afternoon or budget for a taxi. More rainy-day options are in our [backup plan guide](/blog/mount-fuji-backup-plan). ### 17:00 onward, the finish In summer you have daylight past 18:30; in midwinter the sun sets before 17:00 around the lakes ([NAOJ sun tables](https://eco.mtk.nao.ac.jp/koyomi/); times are for Kofu, the nearest point NAOJ publishes). Plan your last viewpoint for 16:00 in winter and treat everything after as bonus. Mind the loop buses too: the Red Line's last run is 17:45, so a lakeside sunset on the north shore means a metered taxi back, as our [getting around guide](/blog/getting-around-fuji-five-lakes) spells out. For the ride home, aim for a highway bus at least one departure before the last one ([timetables](https://fuji.highwaybus.com/en/kawaguchiko/)); winter last buses run earlier than the summer 20:15, so check on the day. **What the day costs:** by train both ways, roughly ¥11,500 in transport and tickets (¥4,200 x 2, the ¥1,500 bus coupon, ¥310 x 2 to Shimoyoshida, ¥1,000 ropeway) plus food. By bus both ways it drops to about ¥7,500. --- What this trip does not include ------------------------------- A sunrise. Sunrise runs around 4:40 in July and just before 7:00 in late December ([NAOJ](https://eco.mtk.nao.ac.jp/koyomi/); published for Kofu, the nearest point, with lake times within a couple of minutes), and no same-day departure from Tokyo beats it. The Fuji Excursion is all reserved seating; reservations open a month ahead and clear days sell out first. Sold out? Ride any Chuo line service to Otsuki and transfer to the Fujikyu local line: slower, but it needs no reservation. | | *What if the forecast turns gray overnight?* | Do not go for the mountain. Swap the day for Tokyo plans and keep a later candidate day: that flexibility is the whole trick. | | *Is the highway bus fine instead of the train?* | Yes, and it is ¥2,000 cheaper.
