From Kamakura's beaches Mount Fuji sits about 70 km away across Sagami Bay, low on the horizon behind Enoshima, and visibility depends on air clarity rather than sunshine. Clear winter mornings are the reliable window; humid summer spells hide the mountain for days in perfect beach weather. Plan Kamakura as a temple-and-beach day that works either way, and check the [Shichirigahama live cam](https://isfujivisible.com/shichirigahama-live-cam) to decide when to ride the Enoden to the sand. Most Kamakura day trips are built around the temples, with the beach as an afterthought. If you want to see Fuji, turn that round: the beach is where the view is, and the air, the season and the half of the day decide whether the mountain is there at all. --- What the Mount Fuji view from Kamakura looks like ------------------------------------------------- From the Shonan coast the mountain is a shape on the horizon, not a wall of rock. Our Shichirigahama camera sits about 70 km from the summit, and our Hayama camera on the Miura Peninsula nearly 80 km. At that range Fuji rises low and small to the west, with Enoshima island in front of it on the right. When snow sits on the summit, look for a thin white line above the dark water: that is the cone. With a bare summit in late summer, even clear air shows only a faint grey triangle. Haze is the enemy, not cloud. Sunshine on the beach tells you nothing, because humid air over the bay washes the mountain out while Enoshima stays sharp in front of it. That contrast is the quickest way to read a live cam: island crisp, no Fuji behind it, the air is the problem. Distance turns visibility into a question of air clarity, and dry winter air is what makes both views work. --- When Fuji shows from the Shonan coast: visibility by season and time of day --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Winter is the season, and morning is the half of the day. The Pacific coast gets its longest windows from October through February, when westerly winds push humid air offshore. Cold, dry days can hold the view from sunrise to sunset. In humid summer weather the mountain often disappears for days at a time. Our forecast archive puts numbers on that shape. We have scored visibility for both sides of the mountain every morning and afternoon since July 2025, counting a period as visible at a [score of 8 or more out of 10](https://isfujivisible.com/methodology). These are archived forecast scores, not observations. The south-side score is anchored on Lake Ashi in Hakone, much closer to the mountain than the coast, so treat it as a ceiling: Kamakura's beaches will sit below it. | Season (August 2025 to July 2026) | South-side mornings scored visible | South-side afternoons scored visible | |---|---|---| | Winter (November to February) | 79% | 63% | | Spring (March to May) | 49% | 24% | | Summer (June to August) | 12% | 1% | | Whole year | 48% | 29% | September and October fall between the bands; the archive does not split them out. Two things fall out of the table. Winter afternoons still scored visible almost two days in three, so a winter sunset on the beach is a reasonable plan rather than a long shot. And summer afternoons round to nothing: if a June, July or August morning cam shows no mountain, the afternoon will not rescue it. The practical rule follows. December to February, go to the beach expecting Fuji and treat a blank horizon as bad luck. June to September, go for the beach and treat Fuji as a bonus. The months in between are when a cam check before the Enoden ride pays off most. --- Where to stand: Kamakura and Enoshima spots that face Fuji ---------------------------------------------------------- Every spot below sits on or near the Enoden, the 10 km line between Kamakura and Fujisawa. Enoden's English site gives Kamakura to Enoshima as 23 minutes and Kamakura to Fujisawa as 34 minutes. All of these spots look west across the same stretch of Sagami Bay, so if one has the view they all do. If the snow line is showing on the cam when you leave Kamakura, the hop is short enough that the view is very likely still there when you reach the sand. Inamuragasaki, one stop toward Kamakura, adds height and puts the island and the mountain in the same view. The temples share the line. Hasedera is a 5-minute walk from Hase Station. Kotoku-in, home of the Great Buddha, is a 7-minute walk by the temple's own directions, so the temple leg sits two stops from Inamuragasaki and three from Shichirigahama. Enoden's Noriorikun 1-day pass costs 800 yen for adults and lets you hop on and off, the right ticket for a day that may need a second trip to the coast. It is easier than arranging the route yourself, but gives you less control over the beach timing. --- How to run the day so it still works if Fuji hides -------------------------------------------------- Put the beach leg wherever the mountain is, and let the temples fill the rest. Kamakura's temples are good in any weather and need no booking, so they are the flexible half. The beach is the half you time. **The cam shows the cone at breakfast.** Ride the Enoden straight to Shichirigahama or Inamuragasaki and see the mountain while the air is clean, then work back through Hase and central Kamakura. The morning after a windy or wet night is usually the clearest you will get. **The cam is blank at breakfast.** Do the temples first: Kotoku-in and Hasedera from Hase Station, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu a 10-minute walk from Kamakura Station. Check the feed again in the early afternoon. From December to February a winter sunset on the beach, with the cone black against an orange sky behind Enoshima, is worth planning around even after a murky morning. From June to September, if the morning showed nothing, spend the afternoon on Enoshima for its own sake and stop checking. **Two sunset windows to know about.** Twice a year the setting sun lands on the summit as seen from the Shonan coast, roughly early April and early September. A Kamakura plan that treats Fuji as a bonus rather than the goal holds up in any weather, and on a clear winter day it gives you the mountain over open sea. --- When the coast beats a Kawaguchiko day -------------------------------------- Kamakura is usually written into itineraries as the fallback for a cloudy Fuji day, and it is a good one. The reverse case matters too. On a bright, dry winter day with a north-side morning score in the visible band, the lakes win: Fuji fills the sky at Kawaguchiko and is a thumbnail at Kamakura. On a day with a poor lakes forecast, Kamakura still gives you a full day plus a real chance at the mountain. It is about an hour from Tokyo Station on the JR Yokosuka Line, with no booking and no seat reservation.
