From November 2025 through February 2026, Mount Fuji scored visible on 82 to 100% of north-side mornings in our forecast data. Build the trip around that clarity, then add the snow set pieces. The Sapporo Snow Festival is confirmed for **February 4 to 11, 2027**, drift ice cruises sail from around January 20, and if last season's patterns hold, the big illuminations light up from mid-October at the earliest, mid-November for Tokyo's Marunouchi display. One warning up front: Lunar New Year falls on **February 6, 2027**, right inside festival week, so early February will be the peak of the peak. --- Start with Fuji: winter is the season it shows up ------------------------------------------------- The single best reason to visit Japan in winter is the air. Dry continental winds strip out the haze, and the mountain that hides all summer stands out for days at a time. Our forecast model has scored visibility twice daily since July 2025, with 8+ on the 0 to 10 scale counting as visible ([methodology](/methodology)). In that data, across the 28 to 31 days scored each month in a single season, north-side mornings scored 90% in November, 84% in December, 100% in January 2026, and 82% in February. Practical winter Fuji notes: - **Mornings are no longer mandatory.** Unlike summer, winter afternoons hold up: December afternoons actually edged mornings in our data ([the hour-by-hour pattern](/blog/best-time-of-day-to-see-mount-fuji)). A midday arrival still has a real chance. - **Diamond Fuji season runs all winter.** Sunset aligns with the summit from Lake Yamanakako through late November, from Tokyo's observation decks in early February, and from Mt. Takao around the solstice: dates and spots are in our [Diamond Fuji calendar](/blog/diamond-fuji-2026). - **You can even see it from Tokyo** on clear winter days: here is [where to look](/blog/see-fuji-from-tokyo). - It is cold at the lakes before dawn, so pack for standing still, not walking. First, several 2027 dates are simply not out yet in August 2026; where the row says "typically", verify on the official site before booking flights around it. Second, drift ice and the penguin walk depend on actual ice and actual snow, so build them as flexible days, not anchors. --- Illuminations that run into January and February ------------------------------------------------ Tokyo's Christmas lights mostly end December 25, but a few of the big displays run deep into winter. Last season's windows are the only ones verified below, so treat them as patterns, not promises: - **Marunouchi Illumination** (free): ran November 13 to February 15 last season along the Naka-dori avenue ([Chiyoda City tourism](https://visit-chiyoda.tokyo/app/event/detail/743)). The most reliable "it will be on when you visit" pick for a January or February trip. - **Ashikaga Flower Park Flower Fantasy** (Tochigi): ran October 18 to February 15 last season ([official site](https://www.ashikaga.co.jp/), Japanese), an easy day trip north of Tokyo. - **Nabana no Sato** (Mie): last season's display ran all the way to the end of May ([official site](https://www.nagashima-onsen.co.jp/nabana/illumination/index.html), Japanese), so it pairs with a Nagoya or Ise leg in any winter month. 2026-27 dates for all three were unannounced as of this update; treat last season's windows as the pattern. --- Snow country: ski and onsen --------------------------- - **Niseko** is confirmed for 2026-27. All four Niseko United areas open **November 28, 2026**, with Grand Hirafu and Annupuri running to May 5, 2027 and night skiing from December 12 ([Niseko United](https://www.niseko.ne.jp/en/lift/)). - **Hakuba Valley** had not announced 2026-27 dates at the time of writing. The pattern is early December to early May, with the full valley open by mid-December ([Hakuba Valley](https://www.hakubavalley.com/en/seasonpass/)). Onsen towns are winter's cheat code everywhere else, because an outdoor bath in falling snow needs no reservation strategy at all. The classic snow pairing is the Jigokudani monkey park and the onsen villages around its trail: it starts near Kanbayashi Onsen, and the old lanes of Shibu Onsen sit just down the valley ([park access page](https://en.jigokudani-yaenkoen.co.jp/access/)). Around Fuji, pair a lakeside onsen stay with a dawn view instead. One item to strike from winter plans: the **Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route** and its snow walls are closed all winter. The route reopens in mid-April (April 15 in 2026) with the snow-wall walk running to late June ([official site](https://www.alpen-route.com/en/)), so it belongs to a spring itinerary, not this one. --- The Lunar New Year crunch ------------------------- Lunar New Year's Day falls on **Saturday, February 6, 2027** ([Hong Kong government holiday table](https://www.gov.hk/en/about/abouthk/holiday/2027.htm)), and the surrounding week is one of East Asia's biggest travel periods. It lands two days into the Sapporo Snow Festival and right on the edge of Otaru's typical window. If you want Hokkaido's festivals in 2027, book accommodation months ahead and expect peak pricing. If you want the same snow without the crowds, aim for late January or the second half of February instead. --- Winter logistics worth knowing ------------------------------ - **Trains keep running; the last mile does not always.** The Shinkansen network shrugs off most snow, but local buses and rural lines in Hokkaido and along the Sea of Japan coast pause during storms. Leave slack around any must-make connection, especially airport transfers on heavy-snow days. - **Pack for standing still.** Sightseeing in winter Japan is long stretches of standing at viewpoints and festival sites, not brisk hiking. Insulated boots with real tread matter more than a heavier coat, and pocket warmers (kairo) are sold in every convenience store. - **Forward the big suitcase.** Luggage-forwarding services move bags between hotels overnight, which turns icy station stairs back into a one-bag problem. - **Mind Japan's own New Year.** Around oshogatsu, roughly December 29 to January 3, domestic travel peaks and many museums, restaurants, and small businesses close. The illuminations stay lit, but plan meals and indoor backups deliberately for those days. - **Budget markers:** the headline festivals cost nothing to wander, the drift-ice cruise is ¥7,000, the monkey park ¥800, and the Zao ropeway ¥4,400 round trip (each cited above).
