*Updated April 23, 2026*

> **TL;DR**
>
> - Diamond Fuji is the moment the sun sits perfectly on the summit of Mt. Fuji, creating a brilliant diamond-tip flash
> - Two flavors: **sunrise Diamond Fuji** (viewed from west of Fuji) and **sunset Diamond Fuji** (viewed from east of Fuji)
> - **Lake Yamanakako** has the longest viewing season of anywhere in Japan (two windows totaling 2+ months)
> - Best Tokyo option: **Tokyo Skytree 450m deck** in early February, book weeks ahead
> - Always check [isfujivisible.com](https://isfujivisible.com) the night before. One cloud and the show is over

What Is Diamond Fuji
--------------------

Diamond Fuji (ダイヤモンド富士) happens when the sun's disc aligns exactly with Fuji's 3,776-meter summit at sunrise or sunset. For about 30 seconds the peak appears to wear a blazing diamond. The geometry is unforgiving: the sun's azimuth shifts roughly 0.2 degrees per day, so any given viewing spot sees the alignment only for a handful of days, twice a year.

If you are standing **west** of Fuji, you see the sun **rise** behind the summit. If you are standing **east** of Fuji, you see the sun **set** behind it. That simple rule explains why Lake Tanuki is a sunrise spot and Tokyo Tower is a sunset spot.

A quick aside: when a full moon replaces the sun, the same phenomenon is called **Pearl Fuji** (パール富士). Rarer, harder to predict, and breathtaking when it lands.

2026 Diamond Fuji Master Calendar
---------------------------------

Here are the 2026 alignment windows for the most photographed spots around Fuji and Tokyo. Treat published dates as the center of a 2 to 3 day window.

Sunrise Diamond Fuji Spots (West Side)
--------------------------------------

The west side of Fuji is quieter, wilder, and harder to reach without a car. The payoff: glassy dawn lakes and the chance at a **Double Diamond**, where the sun and its reflection fire at the same instant.

### Lake Tanuki (Tanukiko)

The most famous sunrise Diamond Fuji spot in Japan. On calm mornings the lake mirrors the summit and you get twin diamonds, above and below. A popular lakeside campground fills up months in advance for the April and August windows.

- **Access:** Car or organized tour from Fujinomiya. Roughly 50 minutes from Shin-Fuji Shinkansen station
- **2026 windows:** April 20 to 25 and August 18 to 23
- **Tours:** [Book a Mt. Fuji tour here](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1235894&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Fdestination%2Fp50001218-fuji-mountain%2F1-things-to-do%2F). Filter for sunrise and Fujinomiya departures
- **Tip:** Sleep at [Tanukiko Campground](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Tanukiko+Campground) and walk 2 minutes to the viewpoint before first light
- **Google Maps:** [Lake Tanuki Viewpoint](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Lake+Tanuki+Viewpoint+Fujinomiya)

### Lake Motosu (Motosuko)

The lake on the ¥1,000 bill. Same west-side geometry as Tanuki but a fraction of the crowd. The view from the north shore around Nakanokura Pass is the one Hokusai and the Bank of Japan both chose.

- **Access:** Car only. 30 minutes from Kawaguchiko by road
- **2026 windows:** Late April and mid-August
- **Tours:** [Book a Mt. Fuji tour here](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1235894&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Fdestination%2Fp50001218-fuji-mountain%2F1-things-to-do%2F) for Fuji Five Lakes circuit options
- **Tip:** Combine with Shojiko and Saiko for a quiet Fuji Five Lakes morning circuit
- **Google Maps:** [Nakanokura Pass Observation Deck](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Nakanokura+Pass+Observation+Deck+Motosuko)

Sunset Diamond Fuji Spots (East Side)
-------------------------------------

Sunset Diamond Fuji is the more accessible flavor. You get winter evenings (clear, cold, statistically the best Fuji visibility of the year) and a long list of viable spots from Yamanashi all the way to the Shonan coast.

### Lake Yamanakako

The undisputed king. Yamanakako sits high enough and far enough east that the alignment stretches across two long windows in autumn and winter, totaling more than two months of viewing. On windless evenings you get a Double Diamond on the lake surface.

- **Access:** Fujikyuko highway bus from Shinjuku (around 2 hours 15 minutes), or car
- **2026 windows:** October 25 to November 25, then January 18 to February 20
- **Best spots:** Hirano-no-hama on the east shore and Nagaike Shinsui Park on the north shore. The sweet spot shifts along the shoreline as the sun's setting angle changes through the season
- **Tours:** [Book a Mt. Fuji tour here](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1235894&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Fdestination%2Fp50001218-fuji-mountain%2F1-things-to-do%2F). Diamond Fuji seasonal tours surface at the top during viewing windows
- **Google Maps:** [Hirano-no-hama](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Hirano-no-hama+Yamanakako)

### Mount Takao

Tokyo's go-to day hike becomes a Diamond Fuji spot for about 10 days around the winter solstice. The summit observation deck faces due west and looks straight at Fuji over the Kanto plain. Crowded, but manageable if you start up by early afternoon.

- **Access:** 50 minutes from Shinjuku on the Keio Line to Takaosanguchi, then cable car or Trail 1 (Omotesando) on foot. [Book a Keio + Inokashira Line pass here](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1262843&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Factivity%2F24660-keio-inokashira-train-ticket-mt-takao-tokyo%2F)
- **2026 window:** December 16 to 26
- **Tip:** Pair with our [Tokyo Fuji daytrip speedrun guide](/blog/tokyo-fuji-daytrip-speedrun-2025) if you want to squeeze it into one day
- **Google Maps:** [Mount Takao Summit](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Mount+Takao+Summit+Tokyo)

### Shonan Coast (Zushi, Enoshima)

The ocean alternative. Short windows but unbeatable compositions with Fuji silhouetted over the Pacific. Enoshima's west-facing beaches and the Zushi coastline both deliver.

- **Access:** 1 hour by train from Shinjuku via the Shonan-Shinjuku Line
- **2026 windows:** April 4 to 6 and September 5 to 8
- **Tip:** The April window coincides with the tail end of Shonan sakura season
- **Google Maps:** [Enoshima Iwaya](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Enoshima+Iwaya+Kanagawa)

Diamond Fuji From Tokyo
-----------------------

You do not need to leave Tokyo. In early February the sunset azimuth lines up with Fuji from observation decks all over the city, roughly 100 kilometers east of the peak. Each deck sees alignment on slightly different days thanks to their positions.

### Tokyo Skytree (Tembo Galleria, 450m)

The highest and arguably most dramatic Tokyo vantage. The 450-meter Tembo Galleria gets an unobstructed western view.

- **2026 windows:** February 3 to 5 and November 6 to 8
- **Tickets:** [Book Tokyo Skytree access here](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1262838&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Factivity%2F41352-tokyo-skytree%2F). Combo ticket (Tembo Deck plus Tembo Galleria) recommended
- **Tip:** Evening slots on Diamond Fuji dates disappear fast. Book weeks ahead
- **Google Maps:** [Tokyo Skytree](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Tokyo+Skytree)

### Tokyo Tower (Top Deck)

The classic. Lower than Skytree but the foreground geometry of Tokyo's skyline is arguably prettier.

- **2026 window:** Around February 8 to 9
- **Tickets:** [Book Tokyo Tower observatory here](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1262839&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Factivity%2F4911-tokyo-tower-main-observatory-ticket-tokyo%2F). The Top Deck Tour (250m) is the one you want, not the main deck
- **Google Maps:** [Tokyo Tower](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Tokyo+Tower)

### Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

Free. Yes, completely free. The south observation deck on the 45th floor faces Fuji directly.

- **2026 window:** Around February 1
- **Tip:** Arrive 60 minutes early. The queue on Diamond Fuji evenings can snake around the elevator lobby
- **Google Maps:** [Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Tokyo+Metropolitan+Government+Building)

### Shibuya Sky

The trendy pick. Open-air rooftop on the 47th floor of Shibuya Scramble Square, uninterrupted 360-degree views.

- **2026 window:** Early February
- **Tickets:** [Book Shibuya Sky here](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1262840&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Factivity%2F70672-shibuya-sky-tokyo%2F). Sunset slots sell out within minutes of release. Set an alarm
- **Google Maps:** [Shibuya Sky](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Shibuya+Sky+Scramble+Square)

### Sunshine 60 (Ikebukuro)

The indoor, family-friendly option. Nowhere near as stylish as Shibuya Sky but warm, spacious, and far less crowded than the marquee decks.

- **2026 windows:** Around January 27 and November 14
- **Tickets:** [Book Sunshine 60 (SKY CIRCUS) here](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1262841&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Factivity%2F14533-sky-circus-sunshine-sixty-observatory-experience-tokyo%2F). Good backup if Shibuya Sky is fully booked
- **Google Maps:** [Sunshine 60 Observatory](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Sunshine+60+Observatory+Ikebukuro)

Photography and Viewing Tips
----------------------------

- **Arrive 45 minutes early.** Scout your sightline before the sun reaches the summit. Crowds thicken fast at Yamanakako and Tanuki
- **70-200mm** for a tight diamond-on-peak frame. **24-70mm** for an environmental shot with lake foreground
- **Tripod is mandatory** for sunset shots. Shutter speeds get slow the moment the sun touches the summit
- **Solar ND filter** for sunrise. Or silhouette-expose and accept a blown highlight for the diamond flash
- **Shoot plus or minus 2 days** of the published window. Summit azimuth shifts roughly 0.2 degrees per day, so the alignment crosses the peak edge-first and leaves the same way
- **Check the visibility forecast** the night before at [isfujivisible.com](https://isfujivisible.com). One band of cirrus in front of the summit and the diamond turns to mush

---

Weather and Visibility
----------------------

Winter (December through February) is statistically the clearest stretch of the year around Fuji. Dry continental air, low humidity, strong westerlies that clear summit clouds by late afternoon. That also happens to be the prime Yamanakako and Tokyo Diamond Fuji season, which is not a coincidence.

Spring and summer windows (April sunrise, August sunrise, September sunset) fight haze and summit cloud. Go anyway, but expect to need two or three attempts. For the science side of why some clear days still hide Fuji, see our guide on [Fuji weather versus Fuji visibility](/blog/fuji-weather-vs-fuji-visibility).

Getting There
-------------

**Lake Yamanakako:** Fujikyuko highway bus from Shinjuku Bus Terminal, about 2 hours 15 minutes and around ¥2,500. [Book the highway bus here](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1193113&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Factivity%2F159339-tokyo-mtfuji-highway-bus%2F%3Fspm%3DSearchResult.SearchResult_LIST%26clickId%3D96cc8e0b2d).

**Lake Tanuki and Motosu:** Car or tour only. Public transit to the west side of Fuji is thin and will not get you there before sunrise.

**Tokyo decks and Mt. Takao:** Trains cover everything.

**Day trip or overnight?** For Yamanakako sunsets you can absolutely day-trip, last buses back to Shinjuku leave around 7pm in winter. For Tanuki sunrises, overnight at a [lakeside ryokan or campground](https://affiliate.klook.com/redirect?aid=94629&aff_adid=1145317&k_site=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.klook.com%2Fhotels%2Fsearchresult%2F%3Fstype%3Dplace%26svalue%3D50358026%26override%3DLake%2520Kawaguchiko%2C%2520Minamitsuru%2520District%2C%2520Japan%26title%3DLake%2520Kawaguchiko%26city_id%3D26576%26latlng%3D35.5349888%2C138.7894596).

Guided Tours for Diamond Fuji
-----------------------------

Alignment timing, road closures, and sunrise logistics add up. A tour takes all of it off your plate.

Hotel pickup and English-speaking guides on most options.
