Fuji rises above the northern shore from this vantage, with the orange Heiwa no Torii gate of Hakone Shrine standing in the foreground water on the eastern side. The lake is at 723 m elevation and sits in the crater of an ancient volcano. Hakone's replica pirate sightseeing ships cross the foreground throughout the day, adding scale to the frame. The Hakone caldera traps morning mist that typically burns off between 9 and 10 a.m., so the cleanest Fuji-and-torii views appear from mid-morning through early afternoon, the reverse of the lakeshore pattern in Yamanashi. A fogged-in early feed does not necessarily mean a cloudy day. How far is Lake Ashi from the nearest station? Hakone-Yumoto, the end of the Romancecar line from Shinjuku (about 85 minutes), is about 30 minutes further by bus to Moto-Hakone at the southern end of the lake, near the shrine and its torii. The lake sits at 723 m in the Hakone caldera, about 30 km south-east of the summit, so there is no walk-from-the-platform view here: check the feed before the bus leg, not after it.
